2021 Predicted Hurricane Activity

The 2020 hurricane season was one of the most active seasons on record with September the most active month on record. 2020 saw intense storms, including a Category 5 storm. Multiple sources are predicting an above average hurricane season for the 2021 hurricane season. This prediction stems from weak La Nina conditions and neutral ENSO conditions, along with warmer water conditions, all of which indicates a possibility for long track tropical storms and hurricanes.

Predicted hurricanes and tropical storms

Forecasters are predicting an above average tropical storm and hurricane season with 16 named storms, 8 of which are predicted to be hurricanes. Four of those predicted hurricanes may be Category 3 or higher.

A key to predicting the intensity of a hurricane season relies on analyzing April water temperatures and other weather patterns as hurricanes rely strongly on the warm water temperature developments during the month of April. In the early months of 2021, water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and the Eastern Gulf of the United States were cooler than normal, due to low temperatures overall. This is right on trend for the hurricane seasons of 2017-2020, where the Gulf waters cooled dramatically in February and then quickly warmed up. In the past few years, this trend combined with an active Western African Monsoon season led to the strong, tropical waves from across the Atlantic.

Current seasonal guidance that a northern high pressure system from the Great Lakes and Canada may open up the lower United States to greater impact from either a hurricane or a tropical storm system. States that are particularly at risk would be Florida, Georgia, and North and South Carolina, or any states near the Central Gulf Coast or the US Southeast Coast.
